Audio: Challenger: Layoffs broader than what we saw after 9/11 Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 11:21 am

Layoff announcements were "a daily occurrence" in November, says John Challenger of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, and that's borne out in the latest tally from the outplacement firm - the largest in nearly 7 years. Layoffs were almost 150 percent higher than we saw in November a year ago, and "this is getting more and more broadbased," with cuts in retail and technology adding to layoffs in the already troubled financial and housing industry.

Financials dip as job cuts hit 7-year high Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 8:38 am

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - Shares of U.S. financial stocks shed 4% in early Wednesday trading, remaining volatile and feeling the pressure from news that November saw the highest number of monthly job cuts in more than seven years. The Financial Select Sector SPDR , an ETF that tracks the financial stocks in the S&P 500, fell 4%. Labor tracking firm Challenger Gray & Christmas said on Wednesday that the financial sector cut 91,356 jobs in November, the second-worst month for industry layoffs since September 2001. In September 2001, the financial sector lost 96,333 jobs. Citigroup's announced plans to cut about 50,000 jobs made up the biggest portion of the job cuts disclosed in November, the firm said. Citi shares fell 4.2% in early trade, while Merrill Lynch shares fell 3.2% and Bank of America shed 3%. Bank of America could end up cutting 30,000 jobs as it moves to absorb Merrill, three times as many cuts as previously estimated, CNBC television reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the situation.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Merrill Lynch & Co. plans to cut year-end bonuses in half after more than $20 billion of losses that forced the U.S. securities firm to sell itself to Bank of America Corp. , Bloomberg News reported Wednesday, citing two people with knowledge of the situation said. The average bonus reduction will be about 50% at the New York-based company, and some traders and investment bankers will face steeper cuts, the report said.
